Wheat berry grass experiment

Here is the final product. The grass in the middle cup was denied water. It actually grew pretty tall at first because the seeds were soaked, but it did eventually dry out. The grass in the cup on the right was denied light. It grew in the pantry. I always felt guilty keeping it in the pantry. I could see it striving towards the light, growing taller, put remaining pale. It's texture is a little different as well. It feels more weak. I felt guilty about the grass denied water as well. It's not even a sentient being, but I felt like I was killing it. I am such a bleeding heart! It's not like it isn't going into the compost in the end anyway. Or the cat's bellies'.
The grass in the plastic container is growing in sand., and the grass in the basket has optimal conditions. Except that the cats did find a way to nibble on it.

Brother is only 6.5, so we didn't document the experiment, the plants were just around floating in and out of consciousness. I gave the healthy plants a haircut for Easter so that I could use real grass in the boy's Easter baskets.

Wind!

We've been reading the books "The Wind Blew" by Pat Hutchins and Gilberto and "The Wind" by Marie Hall Ets. In both books the wind turns and umbrella inside out. After our winding walk this morning, Brother wanted to have the wind turn our umbrella inside out. Fortunately, the area behind our house is too sheltered by the trees to get enough wind!

Spring Baskets update

Our seeds have sprouted. The little bowl received no additional water after the seeds were soaked. The little plastic container is filled with sand, and the pink basket contains regular potting soil (and will be watered.) Brother is very interested. We put the baskets on the table at dinner so he can notice the differences.

Play Silk Science

Brother has covered the heater vents with the play silks to capture air or "make bubbles".

Downstairs in the older, colder part of the house.

Upstairs in the warmer, newer part of the house.

He is noticing that the play silks in the down stiars portion of the house become flat as soon as the heater turns off, but the play silk upstairs stays full of air. He has even theorized that the reason is because the upstairs surrounding air is much warmer than the downstairs. I'm so impressed with his observation and reasoning skills.
