Olly did not find the "G" in my drawing yesturday. He did notice a lot of things though.

After I pointed out the "G" we drew our "Gs" together in our good books. He did his like we do with form drawing. Going over it and over it again and again until it was dark enough to see.
We also had a verse that went with the story. The verse has a lot of "G" sounds, so he is getting the phonics in that way.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8021360865205563493.post-73320569837338934582014-02-11T14:38:00.000-08:002014-02-20T14:38:25.731-08:00Letter Story G

Olly and I have started our first Language Arts block for first grade.

We used the Enki Education story "The Little Falcon". One day I read Olly the story. The next day we recalled the story and we colored our pictures.

Olly's picture did start out with a Golden Gate. He also drew the boy and some trees, with tree roots.

Then the dreadful thunderstorm arrived soaking the boy in rain dark black clouds in the dark black sky. He did give the boy his crystal so that he could control the storm and his fear of it.

This is Olly's pillow. The picture of Rolly's pillow is very similar. For some reason the picture corrupted.

I improved the weaving in this pillow by replacing the cut up t-shirt spokes with yarn that matches the outside of the pillow. I think this looks a lot prettier than the t-shirts. However, the yarn makes it much easier to pull too tightly. I pulled so tightly that even when I put the backing on and filled up the pillow, it is still misshapen.

The backing is made from fleece that I hand sewed on.

For the stuffing, I used the insides of our boppy. Our boppy broke after two children and I didn't want to throw away the insides - so I repurposed them.

The kids do not realize that they are a little awkward and Grandma just loves receiving a gift, so it worked out well in the end.

This is a picture of Rolly's weaving. As Rolly has gotten older (he is ten now) I have realized that I am holding the goal of perfection too closely. We have not done enough crafts. One of the reasons is because I can hold to unrealistic goals of perfection.

In this case it is perfection of materials. The inner circle of mixed purple, blues and pinks was made by dying wool yarn in food coloring. We used a method shared from the Living Crafts magazine. Here is a link: http://www.livingcrafts.com/blog/category/dyeing

That was a really great experience. However, the wool was thin and while I can do that once or twice. I can't do that with every ball of yarn.

The second layer was made with an inexpensive acrylic yarn I bought at Joann's Fabrics. I bought this yarn for a class of a bunch of kids. I don't buy this for myself and it was really difficult to buy it for others. But since it was for a class, I could not afford to purchase wool yarn for all of the children. This was fine. And the kids in the class did love it.

And for me, the experience was freeing. Because I ended up with a bunch of inexpensive acrylic yarn sitting around the house. Grandma doesn't personally care what we use in her gift, so this yarn works out fine.

It was super easy to finger crochet and it looks pretty. The light color was needed to balance out the darks in the center.

Grandma's birthday is coming up in only one week. She really appreciates it when the boys give her something personal for her birthday. And although Brother is ten now, he is just really becoming comfortable with finger crocheting.

We use two different types of finger crochet methods.

This is the type my older son uses, except that he keeps one loop on his finger after the sheep jumps off his finger: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMQr_nLn4FM

My other son holds the loop on his lap and grabs it with his fingers to pull it through. This is much faster and easier for him to control.

My understanding is that usually kids will learn and take off in the skill of finger crocheting in Kindergarten (4-6 years old) in a Waldorf type school. My oldest son has some sensory challenges that we are evaluating. He did not enjoy the rhythmic movement of finger crocheting until he was ten years old.

Ten years old is truly late for a child to develop this skill, so if your younger child is not finding finger crocheting easy (or joyful) by age seven, I would just make a note of it for later.

Now my ten year old loves to finger crochet and he did over half of the pink portion during today's Seahawk's game. which meant that he wasn't "living in his work" but we were on a timeline, so this is where "heaven meets earth" and we just had to do the best we could.

Anyway - we used the information from this blog: http://www.flaxandtwine.com/2012/02/woven-finger-knitting-hula-hoop-rug-diy.html to make our "place mat."

I did use my husband's shirt for this project. You can see that the color of the shirt matters for the center of the weaving. I did not quite realize this when I followed the directions. I think it would have been nicer if I had chosen a shirt to match the yarn. And I would have cut the shirt slices a little thinner.

Anyway, here is the result before I finish cleaning it up and weaving in the ends.

Phew! The energy is getting really wild.

The different types of birds were chattering about which was the best flier. The Eagle overheard and joined the conversation. It was decided that the highest flier would be considered the best flier. Yes, the Eagle was the leading force behind this decision! So everyone tried to fly as high as they could. But no one could fly as high as the Eagle. When he was sure of his victory Eagle began to celebrate. And who should stir in the feathers of his back - but the wren. Being well rested, Wren was able to fly even higher than Eagle - so she won the contest.

Brother loved the story and was giggling uncontrollably when he realized what had occurred. He figured it out before I was finished reading and laughed through the rest of the story. It was really cute!

Here is his picture. His energy is CRAZY. Way up in the left, you can see the Eagle and the Wren. He has decided that they live on an island, and that the island was made by volcanos. So his entire island is filled with exploding volcanoes. Kind of like how he is feeling right now. He thinks the volcanos are beautiful and brought a volcano book down to show me after he was done his pictures.

Also, we exploded our volcano with baking powder and vinegar last night. I think that he incorporated our science experiment into this picture.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8021360865205563493.post-54584837176457886312012-02-28T14:50:00.006-08:002012-02-28T14:57:33.943-08:00The Two Foxes - Scottish Trickster TaleThe next story was about two brother foxes who stole the fish from out of a basket on the man's back. One fox laid in the path pretending to be dead. The man picked up the "dead fox" and put him in the basket so that he could sell his pelt. Once in the basket, the fox started throwing out the fish for his younger brother to cart off. The man didn't hear any of the squeaky noises in the basket or the sounds of the fish hitting the ground. He was too excited thinking of his future with the proceeds from the sale of the fish and fox fur.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 252px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMX42JZpCGPXUIx27EZIvb9FSAHb5ApQ-UeMkzReCaJ5ngyYQBLiRx-jMsiZfe-Jl9yqQeHQH6PujF229wBF19o64_kUUyHRAzpe1HXEIUg2sFQqZz-MHC_pn9FCQgv6ks6wY-rHAPYJPt/s320/DSCF0017.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5714322641590506082" />

Brother included a thought bubble to show the man's dreams of his future.

I thought it was rather selfish and wasteful of the foxes to steal ALL of the fish. It felt like more fish than they could eat. But brother just thought the story was hilarious!

His little fox sure is cute. He definitely caught the energy of the fox with his flash of red with a long nose.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8021360865205563493.post-46578840894169906822012-02-28T14:05:00.005-08:002012-02-28T14:49:40.810-08:00The Fox Outwitted - Scottish Trickster TaleThe next step of our Sages unit is to follow up with some trickster tales. Trickster tales reflect the wild and crazy energy of the eight year old - or second grader.

Our first tale was of a fox who caught a vain goose for dinner. The goose outwitted the fox, getting free again. Brother loved it. He told his dad about it at dinner.

Brother wanted to tell a story with his picture. We will do this by continuing our movement activities through the math unit.

I am not doing really great at having a circle right now. Brother has always resisted it - which makes a lot more sense now that I know about his unintegrated reflexes. So we go for a bike ride or walk in the morning, followed by his physical therapy exercises. The exercises don't take much time, but they can be straining to him because they are re-wiring his brain. It was much worse a few months ago though. And some of the exercises that he really hated have been completed.

After his PT we dance to Loch Lomond and one movement activity that is directly related to the John Muir story. I am probably going to add another dance in a week or so, depending on how this week goes. He loves the Loch Lomond song. We found a version of it on YouTube to listen to a couple times.

We have also made Cocka Leekie soup and Scottish Meat Pie. The Cocka Leekie soup was really fun. He wrote up the grocery list and we went to the store together. Also he did the math to figure out how much stock to add to the soup. It was really great to have him use math in a real life situation.

We plan on doing some more Scottish cooking, going to a Scottish dance and doing another craft.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8021360865205563493.post-79941051781143531622012-02-28T13:43:00.002-08:002012-02-28T13:47:53.289-08:00John Muir Unit Study Ch 4In this chapter, John discovers the Giant Sequoias. The rest of the family follows once the farm is established. This was a hard chapter for me because Johnny had to leave his grandfather behind. I was supposed to do Tonglen Meditation on the story before sharing it, but I didn't have time before we started. So I was sad when I read about the leave taking. Fortunately, both of brother's sets of grandparents live here, so while he picked up on my upset, he wasn't particularly upset by it himself.

Brother is very interested in engineering - so he was mostly interested in the ship that Johnny and his family would have traveled on.

Here is the summary. They are stories of wise people who started out a bit precocious but grew and developed. Beth suggested that we start with John Muir as he played in a castle when he was a boy and my children are both really into castles right now. It was a great suggestion. Brother could really see himself in Johnny when he was a boy and enjoyed experiencing Johnny growing into a man.

This is a picture the castle that Johnny and his brother played in when they were boys.

This is Brother's first official summary. I did most of the summarizing to provide an example. The next day, before we wrote down the summary, we edited it to be sure that everything Brother felt was important was included.

His writing as much improved. I write two sentences on the chalkboard and he has to copy it onto his paper. I also write the same two sentences down on a piece of paper which I set by him. He used to completely copy off of my paper. However, the visual therapy has really improved his tracking. He is able to copy completely off the board now, and actually seems to prefer it. Brother wrote in orange and I wrote in purple. Brother also corrects his work in purple.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8021360865205563493.post-12438509413533410942012-01-30T17:04:00.004-08:002012-02-28T15:16:28.129-08:00Vision ChallengesThis year Big Brother turned eight years old. It feels like he is bright in a lot of ways, but I was very concerned that we hadn't seen any indication that he would be reading in the near future. In addition, he had a lot of trouble copying words from the board onto his paper. Brother would lose his place in the word and in the sentence. These indications led me to set up an appointment with an Optometric Physician. As expected, Brother's eyes would not converge or track correctly. This made me feel a lot better because it explained why he wasn't showing any signs of being an emergent reader. He was unable to focus on the words to be able to read.

Brother's treatment plan included a daily computer program that exercised his eyes as well as some non-computer home exercises. In addition some reflexes, which were important when he was a baby, did not integrate properly as he has grown. So we have exercises to integrate these reflexes.

On the bright side, I am seeing progress with reading. We are reading the Sally, Dick and Jane pre-primers from 1965 and doing the associated workbook. He loves it and the print is big and clear enough that he can read it. And he loves the pictures. On the negative side, his brain is rewiring and weird side effects are occurring. For example, when he is focusing hard, his body starts to itch all over. Obviously that is pretty darn distracting! Fortunately, our therapist provided me with a pressure activity I can do along his spine to reduce the itching. If it doesn't work, then I also have a pressure activity I can do to his face. So far this is really helping out.

Meanwhile, I feel like we have really been floundering. I wasn't getting the feedback that would keep us moving forward with the curriculum. My fellow homeschooling friend, who is really organized - said that we were in a state of emergency. That made me feel a lot better. The most important thing was the visual therapy and the physical therapy. So other things would slide a little to make space for the triage work. However, things have improved and we are no longer in an emergency situation. This weekend we participated in a special needs call with the Enki curriculum writer and she got me moving in the right direction.

So, as of this week, we are moving on with our official second grade curriculum!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8021360865205563493.post-80180367121870861942011-10-17T21:46:00.000-07:002011-10-17T21:51:39.036-07:00Enki Town Board<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 196px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjybbImMBYl23N3Pju4aSBXxBW0cEme2wC210bTanVhEltT-bA0IQcCrkG3obbnc3Qg9x7BLfb-bSG0Y4gB9NWDWjoYVVZswJr8r0-s1GdyCkdHOC-SacZQqtebNpSVjyIka2ypIGbLtk3_/s320/DSCF0001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5664689453013700578" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 197px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj77Kda8GCzsPdF5O0wiLPWOkrr9mNh76TSFwmLH0uD6n3qjFen5ZcaVf6mmn3PxLx2AIMl_nOwROBeGtWR9A7xUqnQRdYQDrf3fGLJ2cvTaNIga96wpWajZF7upkJsJ84mQOiquwVWYPrY/s320/DSCF0003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5664689362746652450" />
This is the town board from our Enki curriculum. It is for learning word families such as Eep/eap and Ight/ite.

I used stockmar water colors directly onto a tri-folder presentation board I purchased from Staples. The paint is really thick. I put it on saucers and added water almost as if I was using oil paint on a painter's pallet. I learned a lot about color mixing and using water colors when I went through this process. It will be good to bring that to the kids.

The town isn't finished yet. It could use some flowers around the houses to make it come more alive. We were stuck inside far too often last year, so this year I purchased rain pants, a rain coat and rain boots for each of the boys. The first thing I noticed is that the rain boots were just being kicked off and thrown all over the place. So, I was inspired to do the Boot Gnome craft in my Enki Kindergarten craft book.

Basically the directions called for using a clothes pin and sewing a little cloak to go on it. Then you could draw a face on the gnome. Brother can sew and was more than ready for this craft, especially since he is seven and in first grade. Little Brother is only 3.5 years old and can't sew yet.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 314px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjbV0-s-d50STwyIZCui-K7yDTndTlE0j49m32J4uh4pC6z7S15caV2KYnvLvIjjK3LqN4RVRRDXXemHcg6FnEI6XBC19eKnp-GUzHhapSVcd-gUsl3rz8ZlmyXNvSFLz0s095w6CZFdV5/s320/DSCF0014.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522807300202373074" />

So, Little Brother glued on an underskirt and he glued on the wool roving hair. I always make one for myself as well. Actually, I make one with scrap fabric when I am alone first so that I am familiar with the process. Then I make one at the same time to boys do.

So, I realize that the process of art is much more important than the product actually produced. Except in this case I really want the boot gnomes to be used to promote good care taking of the boots. Honoring the process over product philosophy, it really doesn't matter to me how they turned out aesthetically. Brother's stitches aren't even, Little Brother's gnome has hair all over him. It's just contained by the cloak. Little Brother used so much roving, it probably needs the cloak to keep the hair on! My issue is that the BOOT GNOME has to function properly and hold BOOTS.

My girlfriend made boot gnomes with her Mommy and Me class a few years ago, so I checked in with her. The clothespins provided did not hold boots either. So, it isn't just am a boot gnome making failure. But, I did have a bit of a tiff and I'm an engineers daughter so....

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 314px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmASAadlbTmaWihEFTAjhy0mD7aNS4W9_kltLzvtpQ-yBvogqecC3EnY_2abCkmXymT2WlfTkcjkzdJGY9gEBTKIKzkh00ooD0gxB_kj_Jy75b_cHWyOlkHi1MddnEC9l6UkTx_8qIZ604/s320/DSCF0001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522807268111274290" />

... we turned it into a wood working project. I sawed off the legs because I had to hold the clothespin in one hand and the saw with the other. I just used an old icky wood cutting board as my working surface. When my hand got tired of holding the clothes pin I realized I could hold it with a portable clamp, but that is still not appropriate or safe for kids.

Then I clamped the head and torso part of the clothspin on our woodworking table and Brother filed the bottom of the torso smooth. After it was smooth he used his manual hand drill to drill a hole in the center of each torso.

Into each hole we glued a pipe cleaner. We just used Elmer's school glue.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 209px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHqKN5bUS70k8Anlevrv7t4YMrc0VnhX_CMc8YqWh4Pu_sl7O9mYlEsInq4ug-HZ55lv_JZq1K6LWFWOIb8FwSFm7a3vxyEkqKpiGe8XcYwjnrM_bk7UBIJ0MMJoW_xs0ACRme448LKILv/s320/DSCF0003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522807273247938754" />

Allowing a day for the glue to dry, we ran the pipe cleaner through the hole in the spring of a clamping clothespin. And now we have a boot gnome that will actually hold the boots! We added an underskirt to hide the top of the clamping clothespin. The boys were very concerned when I was cutting off the boot gnomes legs. Phew! I knew what I wanted it to look like, but when I was out there in our form walking area ready to present the form - I realized I couldn't do it. Oh my! Obviously it is a form that will feed me to work on as well as Brother. Meanwhile, I just quickly pulled this running loop form out and present it instead.

This morning when I was looking in my Enki manuals I read that this running loop form is more advanced because of the midline crossing required and really would be expected to be presented in the later part of the second half of the year. So glad I read that before morning lesson today.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 261px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo8-4qShLrkQLcZ_c31Bfe3m9kBAwa0Ng6U4Vz_1zrvbN643uwgkYAgWDexmLTfLSwtcndgcxu76JP3DbpHKo95q3iJDGGSfhb6QkguWFVwlIwQ7cz7frmKViVI6Mg_yoshlO81kvq5Ek3/s320/DSCF0013.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5521838223705927122" />

So we took the form really easy. When brother was drawing it on the chalkboard, at first he kept drawing spirals. I had to actually put my hand over his and steer his hand at key points in order to break out of the spiral. After we drew the form a few times together I was able to slowly decrease my pressure and remove my hand.

The same thing happened when we moved to our "sand tray" and then again to his Good Book. It was so neat to actually see or feel his brain mapping.

So, tomorrow morning I will be introducing the running wave. I've walked it a few times in the living room, so it should work out better.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 273px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfWsWW5x_ZMbeEEl_GFQ9tYenUa0yB6ls6XRTHm728qUwOfuJbDqTi1ENj3qI4rK-kF6JcXTZrubRlHeWL34pp3DlfQCDs2xwFGoHxbIKTKocwJaJ729owZV_lXemhPt-YlVzX0qh7fcHl/s320/DSCF0015.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5521838213641207698" />

Here is our "sand tray." It's actually brown rice flour in a casserole dish. I was considering purchasing a sand tray, but after the form lesson has been completed Brother loves to build with the flour. So, I guess it becomes like a sensory table tray. It is also how I include Little Brother (Baby). He really wants to be involved, so I try and find ways to include him that are not so intrusive for Brother. Here is Little Brother (Baby) taking his turn with his form work. ;)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8021360865205563493.post-12538210242341867972010-09-22T22:26:00.000-07:002010-09-22T22:31:48.491-07:00Week two - "B"<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 266px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwn32I6FoL9MT58p_yG6rtRbpF6yUrYEydXB9-MIvyhDgONkLNoXWi-zaTX1_qZS6OabMhp6NJSHVoKRhJHHLim6cYg1wyJeTttMG7-RB9qvTipSOxofwvxOrGpSKBqvcq27ntpqrLCbXm/s320/DSCF0003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519976260024848738" />

Brother had a really hard time getting the block crayon to move with the form "B". I was hoping that tracking would kick in over the summer, but it isn't fully functioning in quite yet. Which is totally fine as he just turned seven on the 30th. Hopefully by eight years old he will be fully tracking and can do his copy work from the board with ease.

Today's circle went really well and was a lot of fun! I think it was because the three of us wrestled in the living room this morning before we went on our walk.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8021360865205563493.post-67446757332937371212010-09-14T14:56:00.000-07:002010-09-15T15:08:15.362-07:00Week one - Guess the letter!We are officially back for the second part of first grade now! The corn is growing, but I don't know how successful it will be at producing an ear. The scarlet runners are showing their beautiful red flowers now. I love the red flowers against the green leaves. I am training the pumpkins to flow out the trough and down the driveway a little bit.

The pumpkin made a huge golden flower yesterday. Brother noticed the flower and pulled me aside to share his discovery. I had noticed it earlier in the day, but I didn't anything since I wanted it to be his discovery. I have also notice that there is already a pumpkin growing from that flower! I'm going to let him discover that as well. :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
